Boy Scout Mahakea Gomes was honored recently for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Makakilo Stake in Kalaeloa.
According to Scoutmaster Keith Kaahanui, throughout Gomes’ years with Kapolei Troop 426 he earned 21 merit badges (12 of which are required for Eagle rank), constructed an open-air pavilion at Kapolei High School, and attended numerous camps and adventures on the Neighbor Islands.
Along with the rank’s badge, medal and certificates came letters from President Obama, Gov. Lingle, Mayor Hannemann, U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie and state Sen. Mike Gabbard, among others. Gomes, who currently attends Leeward Community College, also received a special pin that he gave to his grandfather.
“His grandfather really serves as a role model for him,” Kaahanui explained. “Mahakea wants to become a firefighter because his grandfather is a retired fire chief.”
Gomes currently serves as a junior assistant scoutmaster for the troop.“His actions speak louder than words,” Kaahanui said.“He continues to do a good job, and he continues to inspire others.”
