Helpful Hands Clean Up Parks

Volunteers filled three garbage trucks with old furniture, discarded shopping carts, used tires, shopping bags and other debris at Waipahu Cultural Garden Park last month as part of the Mormon Helping Hands, a national effort to renew and beautify parks.

“Tons of material was collected just at Waipahu Cultural Garden alone,” said Jack Hoag, volunteer and church member. “It was a huge pile with everything from mattresses to strollers. Overall, it was very successful.”

More than 6,500 volunteers came out for the all-day project that involved the cleanup of 81 parks statewide, including Waipio Soccer Complex, Central Oahu Regional Park, Blaisdell Park, Oneula Beach Park, West Loch Shoreline and Kalaeloa Campgrounds.

On Oahu, more than 4,000 participants filled five garbage trucks and 5,640 trash bags. Volunteers also painted over graffiti, raked leaves, trimmed hedges and repaired park equipment.

Morman Helping Hands was officially organized by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1998 as a day of service.
