Opposition from the Honokai community to a proposed antenna installation by Clearwire is gaining momentum as area law-makers also express their concerns.

A Clearwire representative introduced a plan in October to the neighborhood board to erect a fake chimney on the roof of a Malahuna Loop house to hide three telecommunications antennas and a microwave dish. The proposed equipment would provide Honokai Hale and Ko Olina with wireless Internet service.

Attendees immediately complained about noise, potential health hazards and the proposal’s short notice.

Board chairwoman Maeda Timson noted after the meeting that nearly 50 people opposed it, and members unanimously agreed that Clearwire was not efficient in providing answers for residents. They adopted a move to oppose the proposal.

“After the October meeting full of opposition from the community, Clearwire still submitted their request,” said Timson.“I was told that the city rejected it as it was improperly submitted. To date, we have not heard anything more.”
