The all-star Hurricane team from Ewa/Ewa Beach will be in Whittier, Calif., this weekend to play in the West Zone Pony Baseball Tournament.
The team of 11- and 12-year-olds won the state title last month in Hilo and is hoping to survive the Whittier games and go on to the Bronco World Series, set for Aug. 5-12 in Monterey.
“This team has great potential as any other team in the next level of tournament to advance to the Pony Baseball Bronco World Series,” said Hawaii Region state director Gwen Earll in a letter advising schools that the boys may miss their opening days of school - if they win.
Playing for the Hurricanes are Justin Areola, Daren Gallano, Garrison Gamil, Kainoa Ganancial, Dorrien Villanueva-Hermosura, Jobe Ibana, Ian Kahaloa, Christian-James Laroco, Jake Mendoza, Gaston Palipti, Chevez Pascua, Dewayne Sprinkel, Chase Wago and Hugh Yamashiro.
They are scheduled to depart July 27 for the West Zone games. To support the team or for more information, call 387-3870.
