Kapolei Library Gets Needed $$

Del.icio.usKapolei Library invites children ages 11 and younger to “Gobble Up A Good Book” along with other educational benefits provided, thanks to a $2,500 grant from Target.
The grant is part of Target’s “Early Childhood Reading” campaign and came just in time to support the library’s fifth annual Spring Reading Program, a free service sponsored by Target and the Friends of Kapolei Library designed to foster a love of reading in children and encourage them to continue reading even when school is not in session.
“This grant is wonderful, because it means we will be able to get everything set up for the reading program this spring, and that may include any of the costs for presenting different events during the five-week summer program,” said Liane Watanuki, the library’s youth services coordinator.
Branch manager Stacie Kanno added that they applied for the grant last March and received the funds in July for this year’s programs. The funding also will go toward other special events, reading incentives, marketing and publicity, and supplies.
The “Gobble Up A Good Book” program began Monday (March 15) and runs through March 27. During the two-week inter-cession, children will receive weekly prizes and are eligible to win bonus awards - all just for cracking open a good book!
There is no reading requirement to receive a prize, and younger children whose parents read aloud to them also are eligible for weekly giveaways.
Two highlights are a presentation of Keiko and Louie: Best Best Friends (Mostly) by Honolulu Theatre for Youth at 10:30 a.m. March 15, and “How to Care for Rabbits” with Zac Johnson at 10:30 a.m. March 27.
