Area Lions clubs will collect used prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses this weekend at West Oahu sites as part of a statewide effort to share them with needy people in developing countries.

Club volunteers then clean, pack and mail off boxes of the donated glasses to people who cannot afford eye care or are too far away to access it. Most recently Hawaii Lions distributed 5,000 pairs of glasses to mountain villages in Afghanistan.

“Just imagine if you could help a child read, an adult succeed in his job or a senior maintain her independence,” stated Lions Club officials.

Collection sites for “Lions Recycle for Sight” will be manned on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pearl City Walmart on Kuala Street and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Pupuole Community Park on Pupuole Street in Waipahu.

Participating Lions clubs include Leeward Oahu, Pearl City and Mana Loa Nimitz.
