Moanalua High School PTSA will have its sixth annual Menehune Kina’ole Awards Banquet Feb. 25 at Honolulu Country Club in Salt Lake, featuring a silent auction at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7.
With the theme “An Evening to Remember,” the event honors the original school staff and faculty from 1972-73, including Pearl City residents Earl Honda (math teacher and track coach) and Mildred Kubota (guidance counselor) and Judith (Yoshida) Hayashida of Waipahu, who was a biology teacher and registrar. “Every year we select alumni or people that have been supportive of the school or have been active in the community,” said Christine Miwa-Mendoza of the PTSA.
“The Kina’ole Award befits one who has done the right thing, in the right way, at the right time, in the right place, to the right person, for the right reason, with the right feeling the first time.
“It’s not just a one-year shot - they have to demonstrate this over the years,” she added. “It’s not just about success in your own personal career, but also what you give back to the community, the school and mankind.”
The event also serves as an essential PTSA fundraiser for classroom needs, educational technology, competitions, teacher development and much more. Proceeds have supported Moanalua’s nationally recognized robotics team and Mene Mac Technology Program.
