Meeting On Honouliuli Plans

Del.icio.usThe public will have the chance to comment on the expansion of the Honouliuli Wastewater Treatment Plant at a meeting for 7 tonight (Dec. 15) at Asing Park, 91-1450 Renton Road in Ewa.
The 48-acre parcel under consideration had previously been slated to become Ewa Industrial Park next year.
Ewa Industrial Park LLC, which had proposed the development of the area into a potential job center, sold the land to the city in September for $26.5 million.
“The Ewa Neighborhood Board was not notified of the maneuver, and the residents were left out of the discussions,” stated board vice chairman Tom Berg. “The right thing to do is conduct a meeting as soon as possible to gather input from the community and forward any concerns to Mayor Peter Carlisle for consideration.”

The scrapped industrial park had been approved by the board in 2007 and was expected to bring about 2,700 jobs to the West Oahu area.
According to a Department of Environmental Services spokesperson, the land was the last parcel available near the Honouliuli facility and provides the city with various future options to improve Oahu’s wastewater collection system, which it is required to do by 2024 under a consent decree with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
In addition, Ewa Industrial Park and Gentry Investment Properties previously agreed to pay for the widening of the two-lane Geiger Road. Because the city does not plan to use the road as a main access point, however, it will not be responsible for any improvements.
