Del.icio.usYo-ho, yo-ho, a pirate’s life for me. Avast, all ye landlubbers! The Black Pearl, starring ship of the Pirates of the Caribbean films, has dry-docked in Hawaii - at Kalaeloa Barbers Point Harbor, to be precise.
Though not the same one used in the original Pirates of the Caribbean, the 208-ton vessel was created especially for the second and third installments of Walt Disney Pictures’ wildly popular film series that stars Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightley, among other Hollywood A-listers.
Filming on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is scheduled to begin this summer, when the Pearl will sail once more following this small overhaul from her long journey across the Pacific.
* The fourth and final phase of the city’s islandwide curbside recycling plan will launch the week of May 2. Residents in Waikele, Makakilo, Waipahu, Ewa Beach, West Loch, Honokai Hale and Makua can expect to see those green and blue bins delivered to their homes within the next 10 weeks. It is advised to place the carts on your property but not to use them until the May start date. Instructional brochures will be attached to the outside of the blue, mixed-recyclable carts. * Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard workers collected $657,245 between Sept. 1 and Dec. 15, 2009, and recently donated the funds to the Combined Federal Campaign, earning a “silver” status at the CFC Recognition Luncheon Jan. 21 at the Hale Koa Hotel. Separate divisions within the shipyard also earned seven platinum, four gold and four silver statuses.
“Even though this was a tough year economically for most people, shipyard employees were quick to support the gift of giving,” said CFC project officer Brendan Cravalho.
The donation will be used to support more than 4,000 local, national and international charities.
* JW Marriott Ihilani Resort and Sap at Ko Olina recently unveiled its new and improved banquet and meetings infrastructure, the Hokulani Ballroom.Formerly known as the Pavilion at Ihilani, the ballroom has been expanded to accommodate up to 1,100 guests for banquets and 2,000 guests for theater-style presentations. An additional improvement to the structure is a new modular design, which includes exterior windows, retractable walls, new interiors and furniture, climate control and broadband wireless capability for up to 1,000 individuals.
“The Hokulani Ballroom will add to the appeal of our resort as a potential meeting and event location outside of Waikiki,” said resort general manager Dan Banchiu.
