Del.icio.usThe Filipino Community Center was among a group of eight nonprofits to receive a $5,000 grant from the city’s Mayor’s Production Grant Program.
FilCom Center was awarded the funds for its production of “Banda Kawayan,” an ensemble of 16-32 people who perform musical arrangements on a range of 96 bamboo instruments.
The grant program, now in its sixth year, is part of the Mayor’s Office of Culture and the Arts, whose mission is to encourage, sustain and incorporate culture and the arts as an essential part of Honolulu’s social and economic life. It is the only grant program in Hawaii to provide support for the production of new artistic works in dance, theater, music, literature and short film that will be part of an organization’s future repertoire.
Upcoming performances of “Banda Kawayan” at the Waipahu venue (94-428 Mokuola St.) are at 6 p.m. Nov. 20 for San Nicola Goodwill Foundation Miss Infantile and Dec. 12 for the annual Pasko Sa FilCom.
Additional shows are at 10 a.m. Oct. 3 at the Children’s Discovery Center and at FilCom Center’s own fundraiser at 6 p.m. Dec. 3 at Hilton Hawaiian Village.

* Child & Family Service has received $5,000 from Verizon Wireless HopeLine to use at its Harry and Jeanette Weinberg House of Hope, an emergency shelter and transitional housing facility in West Oahu that helps victims escape domestic violence and rebuild their lives.
Through the Verizon Wireless HopeLine program, the company collects wireless phones, batteries and accessories from any wireless provider before refurbishing or recycling them. It then donates funding and contributions to a local nonprofit domestic violence shelter each time it opens a new store. CFS was selected after Verizon Wireless opened its newest location in Kapolei.
“The program will use the funds to support the services and on-site activities for the children in the shelter,” said Angie Doi, director of program services for CFS. Verizon also provided phones and airtime to people at the House of Hope.
