An Aiea resident pushing 93 has been named Outstanding Female Volunteer in the Mayor’s 2010 Senior Recognition Program.
Irmgard Hormann founded Hawaii Meals on Wheels and was its first and best recruiter of volunteer help before a paid staff could be hired. According to the nomination form from HMW, however, “Irmgard’s most outstanding trait is her humbleness and refusal to acknowledge her contributions to our community. She is warm, giving, intelligent, compassionate and has an amazing memory.
“She even uses e-mail.” Hawaii Meals on Wheels has delivered hot meals to homebound seniors and people with disabilities for three decades. Although she still helps them out, over the years Hormann also has turned her energies to Friends of the Library, Institute for Human Services, Lutheran Church of Honolulu, Faith in Service of Humanity, plus many neighbors, friends and strangers in need.
Added Mayor Mufi Hannemann at the April 8 awards ceremony, held at the convention center: “Our community gains its strength from those who contribute to its betterment, and I can’t think of individuals who contribute more, or are more deserving of our appreciation than our senior volunteers.”
