Shakespeare doesn’t stand a chance of becoming antiquated - not when he’s learning how to get funky with Boy George and Cyndi Lauper.
The Performing Arts Center of Kapolei will get audiences bebopping when Much Ado About Nothing comes to town Friday night at Kapolei High School Forum.
“I’m integrating the ‘80s through costumes, set and music,” said director Rachelle Amparo. “Our set is very simple but uses pastel colors, pink flamingos and a giant 3-foot Rubik’s Cube.”
Expect to have the story-line expanded via popular songs from the era of plastic bracelets and all things neon.
Billed as a “classic battle of the sexes fused with themes of deceit, intrigue and humanity,” this love story centers around sworn bachelor and bachelorette Benedick and Beatrice.
Benedick, who is tricked by his friends into falling for Beatrice, is played by Kapolei High senior Ian Balag. He’s stepping out of his baseball, golf and tennis comfort zones for his debut theatre appearance.
The prickly object of his sharp tongue is played by Taryn Kuroda, a fellow senior at KHS. Kuroda is a veteran of PACK, having performed in five shows including Romeo and Juliet and Little Shop of Horrors.
Other leads are Claudio, played by Albert Akiona IV, and his lover Hero, brought to life by Alyssa Chang. In addition to 14 performers from Kapolei High, Amparo said the cast includes “one middle-schooler, three home-schoolers and two recent graduates.”
Curtain goes up on the comedy at 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sept. 24.
Tickets cost $6, with a $3 special for students and their families on Sept. 23. Family night is bring-your-own-seat night, so be prepared with chairs or blankets.
