Island Air’s second class of Student Explorers includes two Pearl City High School students, who trained for 10 weeks this spring with dozens of their peers age 14 to 20 in classes taught by the airline’s employee volunteers.
Stetson Shimamoto and Brandon Tretsven are now officially Island Air Explorers. They learned about careers such as flight attendant, pilot, aircraft mechanic and airport operations through visits to various airlines, helicopter firms, food services and airport firefighters as well as from lectures by industry professionals.
Island Air continued the competitive Explorer program started by Aloha Airlines after the airline shut down in 2008. It’s run in partnership with the Boy Scouts.
