Poets Shine In Competition

Hawaii’s Star Poets competition brought two West Oahu students into the spotlight at the reading and awards ceremony May 16 at Paliku Theatre.

Kealoha, Hawaii’s well-known spoken-word poet and founder of the largest registered slam poetry competition in the world, also performed at the event to inspire the young wordsmiths.

Out of more than 2,300 entries statewide, two Pearl City High School juniors won in their grade level of the 10th annual contest. They are Jordan Komoda for Ten Second Rule and Caitryn Lim for Lectures from Mother. Their teacher is Chris Windnagle.

The winning poems are published in Star Poets Journal and also will be available for online reading soon at www.windward.hawaii.edu/poets.

Sponsors are Hawaii Council for the Humanities and Windward Community College with support from Atherton Family Foundation and Windward Arts Council.
