Popular Trash Tours Filling Up

Del.icio.usThe city’s award-winning Tour de Trash 2012 begins Feb. 16 with a tour of Oahu’s wastewater treatment plants, departing by bus at 8:30 a.m. from Kapolei Hale.
In fact, three of the four tours this year begin and end in Kapolei, which is a gateway to Honolulu’s waste processing endeavors.
“How we manage our island’s waste today will affect generations to come,” said Mayor Peter Carlisle in endorsing the free public tours.
“The more we know about systems and technology, the better equipped we are to develop and participate in programs at home and at work.”
The first tour is already full, with a 40-person waiting list, said Marcus Owens last week. The Department of Environ-mental Services spokes-man noted that it’s “one of our more popular tours, and it fills up quickly.”
Those lucky enough to have a seat on that bus will get a close look at the island’s sewage system operations, including the Honouliuli and Sand Island wastewater treatment plants and Synagro Hawaii, which eliminates the sewage solids.
Future tours are planned for May 12 and Aug. 9 on Recycling and Waste Processors (H-Power, Waimanalo Gulch landfill, Hawaiian Earth Products, RRR Recycling Services, Schnitzer Steel) and Nov. 15 on Green Business Recycling. The recycling tour will meet at the Kahala Resort to check out restaurants and markets that are processing their own food waste.
Each of the tours run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Reservations are required, and passengers should bring lunch or plan to pay for their own meal.
Special arrangements can be made for custom tours and school groups as well.
