Posters, Poems On Saving Water

Del.icio.usThe Board of Water Supply is accepting entries now through March 7 for its 2012 Water Conservation Week Poster and Poetry Contest.
Both of the contests are designed to promote awareness of the island’s limiting drinking water supply among the island’s future paying customers, and also to teach youths to use water more wisely.
All Oahu students in grades K-6 can submit posters, while grades 7-12 can enter the poetry contest. This year’s theme is “The Wonder of Water,” and entries should depict what makes drinking water special.
“We often take our pure clean drinking water for granted, simply because it has always been so readily available,” said BWS chairman Randall Chung. “Our contest challenges students to demonstrate their understanding of the importance of groundwater as a precious natural resource, and to emphasize that it needs to be conserved.”
Students should submit one original piece that relates to the theme on a 12by-18-inch paper. Any art medium is OK, except for chalk, charcoal and oilbased crayons.
For the poetry contest, students should send in one original poem typed on a standard 81/2-by-11-inch paper. It must be 150 words or less and no longer than 20 lines.
“I encourage all Oahu students to demonstrate their talent and creativity in these contests to promote efficient water use in the community,” added Mayor Peter Carlisle.
“This is an excellent opportunity for students to take an active role in protecting Oahu’s water resources to ensure a sustainable future for the City and County of Honolulu.”
Winning pieces will be displayed at various venues and featured in the 2013 Water Conservation Calendar. Winners also will receive a U.S. Savings Bond.
The event is sponsored by The Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden, Hawaii Energy, Times Supermarket, Alexander & Baldwin Foundation, Aloha Pacific Federal Credit Union, BWS Federal Credit Union and Pasha Hawaii.
Send entries with a completed entry form by March 7 to the BWS Communications Office, 630 S. Beretania St., Honolulu, HI 96843 or to any satellite city hall during business hours.
