Program Offers Steps To Being Drug-free

Del.icio.usPeople with drug dependencies and their friends and relatives can get help from Narconon’s free First Step Program at Barber’s Point.
The program is a first step toward getting off drugs and fully recovering from drug use. Through hands-on educational workshops, participants learn ways to overcome the difficult withdrawal period.
“In the First Step Program, (participants) do two courses that teach them how to withdraw another or themselves off the drugs without using pharmaceuticals,” explained course supervisor Amy Newman. “Then they learn about self-control and communication, which helps in relapse prevention.”
A sober, supportive family member or friend is welcome to join the attendee in class to learn how to help that person become drug-free.
According to Newman, attaining that goal requires a four-step process:
* Nutrition, because drugs deplete valuable vitamins and minerals from a person’s system; they need to be replaced to help ease withdrawal symptoms.
* Assists, which Newman describes as being “like a light massage,” that helps prevent or lesson muscle spasms, cramps or pain.
* Objectives or “cognitive life skills therapy,” which help participants move attention from oneself, one’s past or pain, to outward-focused attention on the present.
* Communication skills like listening and understanding another person’s ideas as well as how to express one’s own ideas well enough to be understood.
Narconon’s website, narcononhawaii.com, states that the program has had a high success rate in helping participants achieve “zero consumption, usually within 30 days.” The rehabilitation center also offers a number of other programs for helping people become drug-free.
