Recycling Day Visits Waipahu

Aloha Aina Earth Day comes to Waipahu Saturday, when residents can bring all kinds of metal, paper, appliances and old bulky things between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. to the Waipahu High School parking lot, 94-1211 Farrington Hwy.

The recycling drive is spearheaded by local lawmakers and businesses and coordinated by Rene Mansho of Schnitzer Steel, a Campbell Industrial Park metal recycler that, with other participants, will give its cash proceeds from the drive to Waipahu High’s Project Grad. For those needing curbside pickup, call Rochelle Kalili at 675-0150, ext. 305, or Mansho at 306-1876 (also for free towing of unwanted cars).

Items sought are scrap metal, auto parts, bicycles, metal appliances, lawnmowers, newspaper, cardboard, HI-5 beverage containers, passenger tires, green waste, cooking oil, used eyeglasses, all kinds of batteries, plastic bags and hangers, cell phones, printer cartridges, phone books, computers (one per car), usable clothing and household items.

Lawmakers involved are U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono, state Sen. Clarence Nishihara, state Reps. Rida CabanillaArakawa, Henry Aquino and Jon Riki Karamatsu; Mayor Mufi Hannemann and City Councilman Nestor Garcia.
