With local schools suffering under the blanketing economic crisis and students being deprived of 17 days of education this year, a light has emerged at the end of the tunnel for Ewa Beach Elementary School - a light shining $15,000 brighter than before.
The D.R. Horton-Schuler Division donated $15,000 to the school last September on the dawn of EBES’s 50th anniversary celebration. The funds will come in two installments over the next two years. Principal Sherry Kobayashi said she plans to use the gift to support the lower grades. (Ewa Beach Elementary serves grades pre-K through 6.)
“I was earmarking the funds for our kindergarten, first- and second-grade classes because they always seem to not get as much support (financially) as the upper grades,” Kobayashi said. “I’ll be getting together with our parent groups and staff soon to see where the money would best be used.”
Kobayashi added that the funds were very much appreciated and that they couldn’t have come at a better time.
“They’re (D.R. Horton-Schuler Division) very community-minded, and you can just tell that they really want to support the schools out here,” she said.
“Last year (2008) they supported one of our neighbor schools, and each year they choose a new one to help out. I just love that they’re using their money to best support the community around their homes.
“We are just so thankful for this donation and are very fortunate to have Schuler support us this year.
“It’s going to go back to the students for sure.”
