The Kendyl Ko Drug Free Hawaii Family Night is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. March 2 at Hawaii Okinawa Center.
Keynote speakers include Gary Shimabukuro, president of Laulima Drug Free Hawaii; detective Mark Middleton of Martin County Florida Sheriff’s Office; and Keith Kamita, State of Hawaii Narcotics Division chief of enforcement. Feature role model guests include Stars of Tomorrow grand champion and Kapolei resident Jasmin Idica, along with the 808 Breakers and Hawaii’s human beatbox Jason Tom. Hawaii premier DJ Kutmaster Spaz, host of OC16’s Dis n’ Dat, serves as host and emcee.
Zippy’s Restaurants has funded a dinner of heavy pupus to be prepared and served by Waipio’s own A Catered Experience.
Shimabukuro will cover the current drug trends affecting our youth; the misuse and abuse of prescription and over-the-counter medications and inhalants; and international and national issues with substances marketed as “legal highs.” Middleton will focus on Internet safety and dangers, the consequences of irresponsible or careless online practices, identity theft, cyber-bullying and other things children don’t want their parents to know about the Internet. Kamita will provide a display of illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia.
Kendyl Ko was the state program specialist for the Drug-Free Schools Program. His belief in the children of Hawaii and his passion for trying to make the Islands a safer place to live and grow remained a priority for him until his passing last summer. It is through his years of support and his shared beliefs that Hawaii Okinawa Center is able to continue to provide drug education seminars for local communities today.
The event is free and open to the public. For more details or reservations, call Geri Villegas at 453-6530.
