Kapolei Middle School seventh-grader Elizabeth Guhl has put her best colors forward to create a poster for the Shade Foundation, which promotes skin cancer education and sun safety.
Guhl’s poster is one of 38 entries in the nationwide SunWise with Shade Poster Contest, and she needs the public’s vote to be chosen the winner. To support “poster No. 8,” go online to http://www.shadefoundation.org by May 6.
Contestants had to illustrate at least five ways that people can protect themselves from the sun. On April 13, a panel of judges in Washington, D.C., selected one winner from grades 4-8 from each state.
The overall winner of the contest is determined by whichever poster gets the most votes. The grand prize is a family trip to Disney World for the student, a weather-tracking station for the school and a smart-board for the classroom.
KMS art teacher Daryle Mishina said he gives his students a list of contests, and it’s up to them to choose which ones they want to enter.
This is the second year Mishina’s students have entered the SunWise contest.
“It is good for us because we live in Hawaii,” he said, noting there were four total entries from his students this year.
According to the SunWise Web site, state winners get a digital camera and a certificate of achievement. Their classrooms also get a gallon of sunscreen, a Frisbee, UV color-changing beads and a UV Sun Index station.
