Waipahu Intermediate School will officially induct 35 of its students into the National Junior Honor Society at 6 p.m. March 10 in the cafeteria.

“It is the first time we are having this organization, which is an international one, at our school,” said Garin Miyaji, education technology assistant. “It’s a big deal for us because generally the people here in Waipahu don’t necessarily have a good image of the students here. We just wanted to put out some positive news about the students.”

Counselor Phyllis Dilwith oversees the new honor society members, meeting with them on the second Tuesday of each month.

Those with a 3.5 or better grade point average may apply. References are required, and students need to demonstrate leadership, service, citizenship and character.

The group generates community service projects, such as an upcoming clothing drive for the people of Haiti.

“We are happy to have this at the school to recognize those students that do work hard and have their future in mind,” Miyaji added.
