To quote the great Yogi Berra, It’s deja vu all over again!
Waipio’s Little League team defeated Central East Maui 10-6 in a nail-biter of a game held July 27 at Pride Field in Barbers Point to win the state Major Division (11-12 years old) championship.
After trailing Central East Maui for most of the game, Waipio exploded with a major comeback in the fifth to take the title from the 2009 state champs. This is the fourth state title Waipio has held in the past five years.
The team now advances to the West Regional Tournament, which begin Friday in San Bernardino, Calif. Its opening game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Hawaii time against a team from Southern California.
This will be Waipio’s first time back to regionals since 2008, when it went all the way in a riveting win at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.
