It’s time again to head into nature to revel in music, song, dance, poetry and lots more at Hawaii Fire Tribe’s ninth annual Winter Solstice Celebration.Activities happen Dec. 14-19 at a West Oahu location to be divulged only after registration.
“The gathering is an opportunity for people to participate in collaborative, improvisational artistic play, moving beyond the role of spectator into co-creator,” explained Michael Wall, co-founder and coordinator of the gatherings.“It’s focused on creativity, fun, sacred celebration and peaceful fellowship with like-minded people.”
The group’s two biggest gatherings of the year are during the winter and summer solstices, with smaller events during the spring and autumn equinoxes. The winter solstice generally draws an attendance of more than 100 individuals ready to congregate around the fire from dusk till dawn and lend themselves to a variety of creative expressions during the day, including art-making and “playshops"on yoga, meditation and anything else that talent and inspiration offer.
The art-making has consisted of “everything from a community banner to rangoli (temporary art drawn on the ground with corn meal or colored sand) to mask making,” said Wall, adding that “wearing unique and colorful adornment is part of the fun, too.”
The camp encourages guests to stay for the entire six days and to become part of the function by helping out from start to finish. Generally Tuesday and Wednesday are set-up days, with the prime nights around the fire being Thursday through Saturday, with take-down Sunday.
The west side makes for excellent weather, but in the rare chance of rain, the festival goes on, whether under a large tarp or indoors.
Registration fees start at $20 and take into consideration the number of days the person will be attending, accommodations (tent or bunk) and meal plan, which accommodates various dietary needs. Folks also are welcome to bring their own food.
Registration closes Dec. 12.Visit firetribehawaii.org to sign up or for more information.
