From a record 575 entries statewide, young West Oahu videographers made their mark at the annual ‘Olelo Youth Xchange Video Competition, which this year tackled global warming, HI-5 recycling, peacemaker, healthy living and traffic safety.

Area finalists are student crews from Pearl Ridge Elementary (Recycling), Nanaikapono Elementary (Global Warming), Webling Elementary (News), Waipahu Elementary (Peacemaker), Alvah Scott Elementary (Short) and Kapolei High School (Recycling). Winners will be announced May 17 during an awards banquet at the Ihilani Resort at Ko Olina, with Sony video cameras going to first-place schools.

“Our keiki have so much insight to share with us about issues that concern them,” said Keali’i Lopez, CEO of ‘Olelo Community Media. “We hope that the Youth Xchange program reinforces that they have a voice and reminds them that we as a community are listening.”
