West Oahu Author’s Newest Book A True Family Affair

A popular West Oahu author has found a protégé in her 11-year-old daughter.
Aiea/Pearl City resident Laurie Ide, who has published a few children’s books and several guides on flower arranging and lei making, has teamed up with daughter Karley on a book about paper folding.
Hawaiian Sea Life Origami: A Beginner’s Step-by-Step Guide is Karley’s first voyage into the publishing world, and the 36 origami sea life creatures pictured in the book are all her unique creations.
The project got started when Karley was 6 and received a book on dinosaur origami-making from her mother.
“We got the book for her because she likes dinosaurs,” explained Ide. “She couldn’t figure out the directions on how to make them because there were, like, 30 steps in each design. So she ended up changing it around and completing the dinosaurs on her own. She started making dinosaurs for two years at school with any kind of paper she could find - scratch paper, Post-it notes - and she would make other animals and things like Christmas trees and Santa.”
One day Karley called her mom over to see 15 sea animals she had created. Mom got on the Internet and borrowed some books to be sure the designs were unpublished. Sure enough, they all turned out to be original creations.
“My daughter designed the diagrams fast,“Ide added. “If I said we were missing a shark, she’d have to figure one out and if it was kind of funny she would keep trying. It was really fun for her.”
In the book, the mother-daughter duo offer color pictures on how to fold origami squares until they resemble Hawaiian marine animals like a squid, orca, box jellyfish, honu, moray eel, dolphin, monk seal, hermit crab, fish, lobsters and lots more. They also include tales about local culture and list the name of each animal in Hawaiian.
The family affair wouldn’t have been complete without some help from Karley’s 8-year-old brother, Kamren, who helped create the backgrounds depicted in the book. He cut out the rocks and seaweed for the ocean scenes and painted the paper to give it color and texture.
Ide’s mother, Ethel Shimizu, also got in on the action by taking all of the photographs.
