Del.icio.usReynolds Recycling has extended the hours of operation of its Certified Redemption Center in Waipahu. The redemption center, located at 94-766 Farrington Hwy., will now be open Sundays, meaning Waipahu residents can redeem their HI-5 containers seven days a week. The company hopes the added hours will make recycling more convenient for area residents as well as those who visit there on weekends.
The center is open between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. next to Waipahu Times and is able to accept all HI-5 products. For more information, call 487-2802.
* The Department of Design and Construction is proposing construction improvements at the Ted Makalena Golf Course in Ewa Beach.
Improvements are to include new 8-foot-wide concrete cart paths for all 18 holes as well as an expansion of all paths to 12 feet wide in the vicinity of tees and greens. In total, approximately 3.4 miles of cart paths will be constructed along with a new golf cart wash area to be built on the site of the existing one, located between the cart barn and clubhouse.
There are no plans for tree removal, but grassy areas and existing asphalt cart paths will be removed to make way for improvements.
Cost of the project is estimated at $4.44 million. According to the city,the project is expected to benefit golf course operations, improve the recreational experience for golfers and increase play.
The new cart paths are expected to help define the golf holes from tee to green and prevent damage to the tee boxes, fairways and greens.

Built by Castle & Cooke Homes Hawaii Inc., Wai Kalo’i features three-, four-and five-bedroom single-family homes and is named after an ancient spring that brought life to the Waianae mountain range.
* University of Hawaii at West Oahu was recently named among a select group of higher education institutions nationwide for inclusion in the 2010 List of Military Friendly Schools. The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students.
According to G.I. Jobs,all schools on the list share a priority of recruiting students with military experience. Indeed, UHWO’s Pearl City campus makes for convenient access by many of Hawaii’s military veterans, active-duty members and their families who live at Schofield Barracks, Pearl Harbor Navy Base and Hickam Air Force Base.
The list was compiled through research that began last May with a poll of more than 7,000 schools nationwide. Methodology, criteria and weighting were developed with assistance of an Academic Advisory Committee consisting of educations and administrators from Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Toledo, Duquesne University, Coastline Community College and Lincoln Technical Institute.
