Del.icio.usNaval Station Pearl Harbor and Hickam Air Force Base began the official Joint Base transition period called Initial Operational Capability last month. On Jan. 31, the joint base seal was officially unveiled, and personnel removed the Aloha Aina Park pedestrian gate that had previously separated the two bases.
Capt. Richard W. Kitchens, commanding officer, Naval Station Pearl Harbor, is the prospective Joint Base commander, and current 15th Airlift Wing Mission Support Group commander Col. Charles Baumgardner is the prospective Joint Base deputy commander.
The transition will continue to Oct. 1, when Full Operational Capability is expected to be complete. Resources, property, personnel and authority for management functions will then transfer to the Navy, which was designated by law to be the lead agency for the new installation.

* The U.S. Census Bureau opened a local office Jan. 8 at 86-120 Farrington Hwy., A-109, in Waianae. Every 10 years, the office conducts a census of the neighboring population, the results of which determine representation in government as well as how federal funds are spent in the community on projects such as roads, parks, housing, schools and public safety. The Waianae office will serve to conduct census operations for the area and to provide jobs within the local community.
* Jungle River Mini Golf has made navigating the Web a bit easier with the launch of a new and enhanced Web site at http://www.jungleriverminigolf.co m. According to Minda Pascual-Arnold, general manager of the Aiea attraction, the site is designed so that visitors can find information on the 18-hole outdoor golf course with just the click of a mouse.
“Our ongoing goal is to enhance our guests’ experience, and our Web site’s new, fun and user-friendly features were built with their needs in mind,” she said.
Features include a “Party/Group” page that contains useful tips about booking a party, party/meeting space rentals, school excursions, corporate gathers and group/sports team outings; a “Menu” page listing all the different food and beverage offerings; a “Specials/News” section for discounts, special offers and monthly promotions; and the new “Fundraiser” page with ideas on ways to raise money for nonprofit groups.
* Kapolei and Kalaeloa residents, businesses and visitors may have noticed a recent improvement to their wireless service thanks to a new Verizon Wireless cell site. The site extends wireless coverage to east Kapolei neighborhoods and Kalaeloa, including Barbers Point housing.
The network enhancement is part of Verizon Wireless’ multi-billion dollar network investment each year to stay ahead of the demand for its voice and data services. In 2008, the company spent $29 million to enhance services and coverage in Hawaii.
* Mutual Housing Association of Hawaii Inc. has applied to rezone about 17.8 acres in Kapolei to develop an affordable rental housing project on approximately 17.8 acres of land in Kapolei. The project would consist of a 308-unit facility with 703 parking stalls, a private park, tot lots, a community center and communal laundry facilities. The project is one component of a larger master-planned residential community being developed by the state Department of Hawaii Home Lands in the area known as “East Kapolei Phase II.”
The public may review the application material between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays at Kapolei Satellite City Hall (1000 Uluohi’a St.) or between 7:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays at the city Department of Planning and Permitting office (7th floor, 650 S. King St.).
