Island Pacific Academy senior Jonathan Davis has been selected as one of 104 students nationwide to attend the United States Senate Youth Program, a week-long government and leadership education program in Washington, D.C.
“I was so shocked when U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka called to let me know I had been selected for the program,” said Davis.“My time at IPA and experience as student body president has prepped me for this, and I’m really looking forward to it.”
Invited students will have the opportunity to experience national government in action during the visit, scheduled for the week of March 6. They will hear major policy addresses by senators, cabinet members, officials from the departments of State and Defense and directors of other federal agencies, as well as participate in a meeting with a U.S. Supreme Court justice. Students also get $5,000 in college scholarships to pursue careers in public service.
“Jonathan has been a student at IPA since its inception,” said headmaster Dr. Dan White, “and we are so proud that he is able to be part of this program. This life experience is a capstone for Jonathan’s high school education. We are truly excited for him.”
