Youth Win Praise For Posters

A flood of West Oahu keiki are among the winners of the Board of Water Supply’s 2010 Water Conservation Week Poster and Poetry contests.

Entries needed to showcase this year’s theme of “Stop the Drop,” with a focus centered on water conservation through leak detection.

August Ahrens fourth-grader Olakainoa Carvalho took home first-place honors in the grade 3-4 poster category, while second-grader Shaniah Hernandez Fonoti of Waiau Elementary and sixth-grader Kylah Reed of Kapolei Middle both won third place for their artwork in their respective grade divisions.


 

Honorable mentions went to kindergartners Matthew Fonoti (St. Elizabeth Elementary) and Meah Heffelfinger (Holomua Elementary), second-graders Makana Ko and Ebony Givens (Webling Elementary), and sixth-grader Alexandria Gariepy (Kapolei Middle).

All entries will be on exhibit May 17-28 at Kapolei Hale Courtyard. They then travel to Kahala Mall from June 7 to 18,Windward Mall between June 21 and July 2 and the BWS Public Service Building from July 5 to 16.


The winners each received a U.S. savings bond and other prizes for their efforts.Winning and honorable mention artwork and poems also will be featured in the BWS’s 2011 water conservation calendar, available at the end of this year.
