About 200 church and community members gathered Dec. 30 at Aiea Hongwanji Mission to welcome the New Year in traditional Japanese style. “Pounding mochi is good luck for you,” explained church member Harriet Zakahi of the annual event. “We had some first-timers and some who come every year. Even the kids help pound.” Preparation for the steaming and pounding of rice began at 5:30 a.m. “We did everything that they do in Japan,” said mission president George Zakahi. “We pounded over 200 pounds, and whatever we made, we gave out to whoever came. Everybody had samples to take home. It is our way of expressing thank you to the community for celebrating the New Year the real Japanese way.”
