Waipio Soccer Complex is the usual stomping grounds for games and tournaments. But on the morning of April 4, the football (that’s soccer to us on this side of the pond) field was home to a very special matchup.
Leeward American Youth Soccer Organization Region, which draws players from Kalaeloa, Ewa, Waipahu and Makaha, held its annual Very Important Player Tournament for children with physical or mental disabilities.
Forty volunteer buddies kept watch as four groups of players from age 5 to their early 20s took to the field in four rounds of play. Everyone went home a winner and took with them a souvenir from the closing medal ceremony.
