Pearl City Elementary School proved reading can be fun at its annual Celebration of Literacy on Feb. 13. Students, families, faculty, friends and staff gathered in the cafeteria for slices of pizza, a raffle drawing and the firstgraders’ performance of the song ‘10 Little Fish.’ Then the families filled classrooms for book readings by six representatives from the state Department of Education’s Leeward District office. In Room 15, first-graders enjoyed Debra Yamakawa’s reading of ‘Caps for Sale’ by Esphyr Slobodkina. A handson hat-making activity followed. But the night didn’t end until student Jessica Bogac-Moore was honored with a $25 Wal-Mart certificate for winning the school’s “Drug-Free Week” poster contest.
