There was no sleeping in the morning of Aug. 16, as 35 employees from Bank of Hawaii and 16 YouthBuild Honolulu students painted and cleaned eight public housing units at the Kamalu-Ho’olulu Public Housing Complex in Waipahu. The volunteers laid tile, patched walls, replaced windows and spruced up the senior housing project as part of National Community Service Day 2008. Even U.S.

Rep. Mazie Hirono and U.S. Sens. Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka took up a paintbrush and hammer to help out the cause. Formerly known as Community Build Day, Community Service 2008 is a nationwide event organized by Financial Services Roundtable’s Community Service Initiative, now in its seventh year.
