More than 300 people showed up for the Kapolei Relay for Life on the Kapolei High School field. Among them were 70 survivors and their caregivers. Twenty-five teams participated in the 7 p.m. June 9 to 7 a.m. June 10 relay. Survivors and caregivers ran the first lap together. American Cancer Society’s executive director, Jennifer Grantham, recalled a special memory of the evening: “At 10 p.m. we had an extremely moving luminaria ceremony,” she said. “The lights were turned off and more than 600 luminaria bags and candles lined the inside of the field, honoring loved ones who have survived cancer and memorializing those who lost their battle. The name of each person on every bag was read during the ceremony. It was very touching, and many of us shed tears.”
