Waipahu Hongwanji Bon Dance

Del.icio.usAbout 500 visitors stepped and moved their arms in graceful unison at Waipahu Hongwanji’s annual bon dance on July 13 and 14. Guests enjoyed dinner plates of curry, saimin, stew and other customary bon dance fare, including andagi (supplied by Guy Ujimori).
Groups of dancers representing eight temples from Kahuku to Waianae were dressed in hapi coats unique to their group. Keeping with tradition, the eight temples support each other at bon dance time. And members, generally women, from each temple prepare food for the dancers.
“The food is often quite elaborate,” said congregation member Lillian Nagaji, who helped out at the choba, or booth where towels are handed out and donations are accepted. The temple held a craft sale with hapi coats proving to be the most popular item. “People buy them all,” said Nagaji. “It was a lot of fun.”
