Cars lined Iwaena Street on Aug. 4 as visitors made their way to the 19th annual Open House and Unthirsty Plant Sale at Halawa Xeriscape Garden. One definition of “xeriscape” reads, “A style of landscape design requiring little or no irrigation or other maintenance, used in arid regions.” Though arid is not a term anyone would use to describe Hawaii, the Board of Water Supply teamed up with the Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden to promote the board’s waterpreserving mission, “Water for Life - Ka Wai Ola.” Xeriscape plants allow for a beautiful garden while saving water.
