Oregon State University and its head football coach Mike Riley continue to make inroads in recruiting on the Island, unveiling a 2007 class recently that included six players from Hawaii.
The Beavers had also signed six players from Hawaii in 2006. Aiea standout Lofa Liilii is among the members of Oregon State’s most recent class. A 5-foot-9 (165-pound) wide receiver, Liilii missed half of his senior year with an injury, but was still voted the Oahu Interscholastic League’s Red Division Offensive MVP. As a junior he had 80 receptions for 1,400-plus yards. Last month, he played for the Hawaiian All-Stars in an event in Samoa.
Waipahu High School’s Castro Masaniai also committed to the Beavers. A defensive lineman who packs 244 pounds into a 6-foot-3 frame, Masaniai was a first team all-league selection as a senior and offensive lineman, and a second team all-star on the defensive side of the ball, in helping Waipahu win its first league title in 35 years. The Marauders also advanced to the Division II state semifinals last November.
