For the Pearl City volleyball team, some unfinished business has finally been finished. Even so, while it recently defeated Aiea for the first time in a few years, there was no indulgent celebration to follow. The ultra-competitive nature of the OIA Red West ensured that Pearl City moved on quickly.

Indeed, on the heels of that much-anticipated match, the Chargers played an up-and-coming Campbell team.

“For the past couple of years, we haven’t been able to beat them (Aiea), so it was a confidence boost. But Campbell has a really good team, too,” said Pearl City coach Stephanie Shigemasa, whose team opened the season at 3-0. “They have some really good players.”

Pearl City will play one of their toughest road games of the year Thursday when they visit Mililani. The Trojans finished third in the Red West in 2009, right behind Aiea and Pearl City when Na Ali’i were completing a second unbeaten season in the Red West and Pearl City was runner-up.

“Along with Aiea, Mililani always gives us a good game,” Shigemasa said. “They’re always tough. It went down to the wire with them last year (in both meetings). It was point for point.”

The Pearl City team is still solidifying its lineup, which is highlighted by seniors Tonisha Buford and Marie Fujii and junior Brandee Chun.

“No one person has carried us in our games,” Shigemasa said. “Everyone has just kind of been doing their jobs.”

huge for Pearl City and nicely position it for the second half of the season. Pearl City plays Aiea again Sept. 21 (away) and hosts Mililani Sept. 30.

“Confidence-wise, it would be good if we played well against them,” she said. “We just need to play consistent volleyball.”

While the Chargers are familiar with every opponent, the emphasis is more on her own team, Shigemasa said. “We still have a lot to work on, but we’re on the right track. Hopefully we’ll improve every day and peak at the right time.”

Pearl City will have a full week off after Thursday’s Mililani match, and returns to action Sept. 16 at Waianae.

Pearl City defeated the Seariders in its Red West opener Aug. 26.
