Gymnasts from around the world will spring into Le Jardin Academy’s new gymnasium this weekend to compete in the 34th annual Aloha Gymfest.
Hosted by Kokokahi Gymnastics Team, the event welcomes 240 female gymnasts ages 6 to 18 years old from Japan,Australia, New Zealand and the U.S. Mainland. The Kokokahi team itself has entered 50 gymnasts.
“This is an invitational meet, and professional judges are being brought in from the Mainland,” said KGT coach Kim Yow. “We do our best to make the meet fun so all the girls can meet other gymnasts from different countries. The girls are very fortunate that they have the opportunity to compete in an international competition.’
The gymfest opens at 3 p.m. Friday and continues throughout the evening, resuming Saturday at 8 a.m. Top-level gymnasts are scheduled to compete at 6 that night.
“They will compete by skill level and age groups,” Yow explained. Contests are in floor exercise, uneven bars, vault and balance beam.
“As for our team, the first event of the year is not always the best, because the kids are just getting into competition form again - but I think they should fair pretty well,” Yow said.
Admission ranges from $6 to $15, and tickets are available at the door.
