Fehokus Are Serious About Child Care

Del.icio.usThe Kamaaina Kids ohana honored two employees as heroes March 30 for their extraordinary effort to shield nine keiki during an excursion that turned violent a week earlier in Kailua.
Group leaders Feao and Semisi Fehoku, who are brother and sister, were at Pali Lanes the morning of the fatal stabbing March 23, in which Harlan Bruce Kamekona, 49, died and his ex-girlfriend Terry Paulo, 38, was seriously injured.
“I know the meaning behind the words ‘swollen with pride,’ ” said Jaque Shin, school-age manager with the Kailua child care agency. “They reacted instinctively and with a tremendous amount of courage, putting the safety of the kids before their own.”
The Fehokus quickly gathered the children (grades K to 5) and took shelter in a game room storage closet at the back of the building, while suspect Kamekona chased Paulo with a gun and knife, and women’s league bowlers tried to protect her. When police arrived, the children were escorted to safety. The victim is recovering from knife wounds, but the man apparently died of a self-inflicted stabbing.
The Fehokus’ recognition came during an employee luncheon at Kaneohe Yacht Club.
