An important but nondescript Kailua intersection should be turning green soon as the Lani-Kailua Outdoor Circle has signed off on renovation work at the Kalapawai triangle.

“Right now it is roped off and we are hoping that the area will become a green oasis at that very busy intersection,” said LKOC beautification chairwoman Lynn Rogers.

Completed by Steve’s Gardening and Kaneohe landscape architect Steve Mechler, the intersection of South Kalaheo Avenue and Kailua Road has been reprogrammed as a grassy area with tropical plantings. A concrete mowing strip will surround the existing banyan tree.

The community collaboration is funded by $50,000 that LKOC raised during the annual “I Love Kailua Town” party.

The irrigation and landscape work took one week to complete, according to Mechler. “It is right in the forefront of town, a very visual setting. We wanted to re-invigorate, re-energize that town space, adding to the tree that was planted in 1954 as a gift to the Dowsett family.”

The plants and shrubs were chosen specifically for their ability to endure a coastal, salty environment. Mechler estimates it will take three months for the shrubs to root substantially and for significant growth to be noticeable.

“This is a project where for those who raised money saw tangible results in a short amount of time, which can be rare,” he said. “It was a pleasure working with an entity like LKOC; we wanted to minimize any interruption in traffic, and the coordination with LKOC, the city and Kailua as a town was very smooth.”
