Local Talent to Shine At Ho’olaulea

Del.icio.usSet for 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 27 on the Windward Community College Great Lawn with a homegrown lineup of award-winning entertainment, the eighth annual Windward Ho’olaule’a promises rewards for the whole family.
“The main purpose is to showcase the college’s programs and the talent on the Windward side, from musicians to local businesses and crafters,” said Libby Young, Kaneohe Business Group president and WCC professor, and it all ties into the theme “Pulama ka hanauna hou” (nurturing the next generation).
The Hokulani Imaginarium will offer shows to take visitors on tour of the universe, and many displays and exhibits will focus on WCC programs, including the sciences, arts and Hawaiian culture. Island craft sales and food booths also will be set up, along with games for the keiki, a used book and white elephant sale, and an expanded silent auction whose proceeds will build up the first general endowment scholarship fund for WCC students. A variety of sought-after items are up for bid, including round-trips to Maui on the Superferry; a timeshare stay in Cabo, San Lucas, Mexico; a 2008 Nissan Versa and two other cars; tickets to WCC’s fall production of Miss Saigon and other shows; and family passes to attractions like the Honolulu Zoo and Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park.
Entertainment is nonstop on the lawn stage, featuring Na Kapuna O Koolau at 9:15 a.m., Pila Nahenahe at 10:15, Royal Hawaiian Band at 11:15 a.m., Hawaii Loa at 12:15 p.m., Halau Hula O Napunaheleonapua at 1:15, the Geezers at 2:15,WCC slack key students at 3:15, Halau Hula O Na Wahine at 4:15, Kaneohe’s own Hoku Zuttermeister at 5:15, Cyril Pahinui at 6:15, Pilioha at 7:15 and Kaukahi at 8:15.
“We like bringing talent, especially musical talent to the Windward side,” Young added, “and it helps us to highlight what’s special about Hawaiian music and culture, and to share that with both visitors and locals.”
There is an art corner as well as notable artists like Hiroshi Tagami, Gary Reed and Michael Powell, who will have paintings for sale and time to talk about their work.
