New Manager Energizes Bay View Course

Del.icio.usIf you had happened by Bay View Golf Park at the beginning of the year to find only closed doors, don’t worry. It was just a 10-day pause so a new management team could come in and set its own plans into action.
And according to property manager Ken Yuen, this new phase will see considerable changes to the affordable Kaneohe golf course.
“It’s going to be a better course,“said Yuen. “We’re going to do new greens, we’re going to have nicer carts, and we have a former Japanese golf pro as the manager now.”
Haruki Hirai, who also helped Olomana with its groundskeeping and operations, takes over nearly all of the course operations for very good reasons,Yuen explained.“Mr. Hirai has a lot of good ideas to make it a better course. We were OK with the way it ran before, but we feel that he will bring more expertise about how to run it and make it a better course.”
In addition to course improvements,Yuen said the owners are spending “a lot of money” on upgrades to nearly every facility on the property. Changes to the mini putt courses are scheduled to begin Feb. 1 along with repairs to the driving range. The course also is in negotiations with four restaurants interested in providing food service.
“The whole property is going to come alive,“he said.“We’ve got the restaurant, we’ve got new management of the golf course, the mini putt is going to reopen. Roger Dunn has been there and is a loyal tenant. And the range - we just redid our dividers and it looks great, we’ve got new mats. We have a clause in the contract with the golf range tenants that they have 60 days to fix the nets, and he has some great ideas about targets on the range. It’s all coming together.”
Bay View Golf Park has always been an affordable, family-orientated spot where people can work on their game without a large financial commitment - something that is especially important today, Yuen said, and this philosophy will continue. They’ll even be a shave ice stand and a possible farmer’s market on weekends.
“The synergy is there right now. It’s been a work in progress as far as operations, but it looks really good, even in this trying economy.”
The mini putt courses should reopen this spring, which is more good news for families. Since their creation, the two 18-hole mini courses have been a popular form of affordable entertainment.
