Windward Rotary Club will honor famed Lanikai cookie-man Wally Amos during its Service Above Self banquet from 6 to 9 p.m. April 26 at Mid-Pacific Country Club.
The ubiquitous proprietor of Kailua’s Chip and Cookie shop is this year’s special guest for “helping the community above and beyond himself.” Amos has been working for years as a literacy advocate from local to national levels.
“We’re very excited,” said Rotarian Peter Look. “The whole purpose is to raise money for education, and his mission is to bring literacy to all of the country. It’s nice that they both tie in together.”
Tickets cost $100 ($50 is tax deductible) and must be purchased a week ahead. For details, call Hazel Rand at 221-0316.
Amos also is on the boards of National Center for Family Literacy, Read to Me International, Communications in Schools, Good Beginnings Alliance and Hawaii Literacy. He and wife Christine founded the Chip and Cookie Read Aloud Foundation.
Past awardees include Hazel Rand, Michael W. Perry and Charles Burrows.
