Seafood Fest, Golf To Help Out Kahuku

Del.icio.usIt will be an all-out weekend of shrimp, poke, beer, music and golf Oct. 12-13 at the Benchmark Hospitality International’s third annual Seafood Festival at Turtle Bay Resort.
The two-day affair benefits the area’s library and hospital at the same time it celebrates the North Shore’s famous roadside shrimp entrepreneurs. Beginning Oct. 12 with “Taste of the North Shore Shrimp Trucks,” participants include Macky’s, Fumi’s Kahuku Shrimp & Seafood, Honu’s, Famous Kahuku Shrimp, Giovannis’ Shrimp Truck, Romy’s Kahuku Prawn & Shrimp Hut, Big Wave Shrimp and Aloha Shrimp.
They all will prepare their specialties on-site for crustacean lovers to savor. Three top selections from Sam Choy’s Big Aloha Brewery will be served to accompany the shrimp samplings, and music will be provided by Kawao. Items up for bid at a silent auction will benefit the Kahuku Library Bookmobile Project. Tickets for the shrimp-and-beer buffet are $35 per person and are available at the door or at the resort’s concierge desk.
Day 2 begins with the Sam Choy Poke Festival at 6 a.m. Oct. 13, when professional and amateur chefs gather to prepare their dishes. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. for poke fans to watch as Choy and emcee Kimo Kahoano introduce guests and launch the judging portion of the competition. First place in the pro division earns $1,200 plus gifts, and first for the amateurs wins $1,000 plus gifts. Admission is $25.
The Sam Choy Invitational Golf Tournament follows, where players can purchase slots to golf with local chefs and celebrities. Proceeds from the event benefit Kahuku Hospital.
Concluding the festival is Chefs’ Seafood Under The Stars at 6:30 p.m. For $75 a person, guests can graze on the all-you-can-eat buffet with food stations manned by chefs like Choy, Hector Morales, John Armstrong, Rodman Machado, Fred DeAngelo (of Ola at Turtle Bay) and D.K. Kodama. The Ka’ala Boys will provide musical entertainment. Tickets are available at the door or at the concierge desk.
