The new year brings new beginnings, and the state Department of Education has its sights set on school reform. Toward that end, the second annual Castle Complex Education Summit will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Koolau Golf Club Ballroom.

It’s free and open to the public. The “Be A Transformer” Summit is for members of Castle Complex schools, parent boards, community councils and other interested parents to discuss how they can work together to support local schools and increase academic achievement.

“It’s going to be wonderful,” said Cynthia Okazaki, site manager for PACT Kaneohe Community Family Center. “We’re going to train parent leaders, as well as other agenda items.” She explained that a grant to Castle Complex from the Harold K. L. Castle Foundation is making the summit possible.

“We come together to talk about our children’s education, common challenges and opportunities, and how we can work together to make education a priority in our community,” added Lea Albert, area superintendent for the Castle-Kahuku Complex.“At the first summit we learned how the DOE operates and how we can evaluate our schools’performance. For the second summit, we’ll be learning about the potential of school community councils to positively impact education. We’ll look at what it takes to implement change and how we can all play a role in decision-making.

“We’re inviting Board of Education members and our area legislators so they can be a part of the process too,” she added.
