Concerns about illegal drug use near Hygienic Store in Kahaluu have prompted community agencies and elected Windward officials to seek funding for cameras and other security measures in the area.
Within the past two weeks alone, there were reported arrests for attempted murder, car theft and other crimes at the site.
State Rep. Jessica Wooley said the action plan was spurred by numerous calls she received about alcohol and drug use at the longtime, notorious juncture of Kamehameha and Kahekili highways.
“It’s not really a family-friendly space,” Wooley said, “and it’s really close to the school and shopping places that a lot of people would like to go to, but can’t.”
She has secured $1 million in capital improvement funds to pay for security devices, but must wait for the governor to release the money; then the project could go out to bid.
The funds should become available before the fiscal year ends next June, Wooley estimates.
“Until them we don’t have any money, but the community is willing to pitch in.”
The plan calls for the installation of security cameras, leveling the ground to make it safer for people to use, and trimming the large banyan tree to improve visibility and give lawbreakers less room to hide.
Wooley said City Council Chairman Ernie Martin and Pastor Kevin Akana of Windward Baptist Church have been big supporters of the plan, which must work with private, county and state landowners.
Residents seeking information or who would like to comment on the plan may call Wooley at 5868540 or come to the Dec. 14 Kahaluu Neighborhood Board meeting.
