When library renovations were completed last month at Blanche Pope Elementary School, Target Corp. announced yet another partnership to help the school nurture the budding brains of its students - it’s joined with Feeding America to create Meals for Minds.

The new library was a noisy, bustling place on May 23 as volunteers sorted stacks of books and also bags of food from Hawaii Foodbank, which has in turn partnered with Meals for Minds to get healthy fruits and staples into bags for families to take home after school. The new food pantry will stock edibles for the keiki each month.

“By helping feed under-nourished children,” Target explains on its website, “we can help them concentrate and perform better in school.”

Besides the food and the seven books given to each child to take home, the crowd of about 400 witnessed the unveiling of the new flooring, decor, shelves, furniture, four desktop computers and eight laptops and eco-friendly design of the library - which also has 2,000 new books.

“It’s resulted in a wonderful environment that will help encourage a love for reading and learning while inspiring our students to achieve,” declared principal Ofelia Reed. “We are grateful to Target and everyone who has helped make this library renovation possible.”

It took several weeks and the help of 150 volunteers to transform the library. Playing key roles were Dck Pacific Construction, Target’s Heart of America Foundation and the state DOE. Dck Pacific crews did most of the heavy lifting, demolition work, wall treatments and more, logging about 500 hours of labor, with help from Jade Painting and Alii Flooring.

“We are happy to lend a hand to Target and join in their commitment to local communities as we share an interest in providing opportunities for Hawaii’s kids,” said Dck Pacific project manager William Maguire.
