The I Love Kailua Party is just around the corner, happening April 17 from 11 a.m. To 4 p.m., and details are coming in about the popular block party.

The area of Kailua Road in front of Longs, Macy’s and Kailua Shopping Center will turn overnight into a community marketplace with food booths, crafts, a plant sale, keiki fun zone, a health fair and live entertainment.

What started nearly 20 years ago as a small shindig in a parking lot to benefit Lani-Kailua Outdoor Circle is now an annual party attracting about 7,000 visitors.

“All the musicians and all the restaurants are from Kailua,” said LKOC member and event chairwoman Lyn Turner. “This year we’re going to have even more restaurants.”

On the lineup are A Cup of Tea, Agnes’ Portuguese Bake Shop, Baskin Robbins-Kailua, Down to Earth, Big City Diner, Bob’s Pizzeria, Buzz’s Original Steak House, Cinnamon’s Restaurant, Crepes No Ka ‘Oi, Formaggio Grill, Great Harvest Bread Company, Jus’ Right Kettle Corn Popcorn, India Cafe Curry Express, Los Garcia’s Mexican Food, Na ‘Ono, P. Mini Donuts, Pinky’s Pupu Bar & Grill, Tat’s Shaved Ice, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, The Hibachi & Fat Boy’s and Tokoname Restaurant & Sushi Bar.

Area residents are encouraged to walk or ride bikes, and dogs are welcome.

“There’s not a lot of room down there, but people have a good time,” said Turner. “It’s amazing how people come from all over to go to this thing.”

Except for the food booths, the party is run by volunteer help, and funds from the sale of $3 commemorative buttons - available at the fair or ahead of time at Longs, First Hawaiian Bank and other Kailua venues - go toward fulfilling LKOC’s motto: Keeping Kailua Clean, Green and Beautiful.
